Snapshot: CEA’s AFT Connection and Communist network in CT

The Connecticut Educator’s Association, its main teacher union, worked closely with AFT Connecticut during Sharon Palmer’s tenure as AFT president, as they continue to do today.

From 2020: Palmer was a lifelong Connecticut resident who served as AFT Connecticut vice president and president from 1989 through 2012, and as labor commissioner for the State of Connecticut from 2012 to 2015. “We will miss Sharon’s passion for education and the Connecticut labor community,” said CEA President Jeff Leake. “She was a champion for labor and a dedicated partner working for teachers.”

About 100 labor and progressive activists packed the New Haven People’s Center Dec. 5, 2004, to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the Communist Party USA at a reception hosted by the Connecticut Bureau of the People’s Weekly World.

Several state leaders in the movement for social change were honored, including Sharon Palmer, president of the American Federation of Teachers in Connecticut, 

Americo Santiago, program and policy director of DemocracyWorks, and the Rev. Scott Marks, New Haven director of the Connecticut Center for a New Economy.

Labor unions sound innocent enough on the surface, but their goals in the 21st century have, in reality, helped workers LESS. Teacher unions in particular fight more for funding than actual student progress.
