In organizations—companies, non-profits, churches, etc—it has become essential to know if you are dealing with a toxic CEO, board president, or other group leader.
Here are five signs to watch for.
- Public image. Image holds a very high value, and toxic leaders will want to present to you their best—at least at first.
- They’re always right. The toxic leader will never ask themselves, “Could my actions be the problem?” They may not overtly insist that they are correct–but they’ll insist you are incorrect.
- Little to no empathy. This means you may never get a “thank you” or “I’m sorry”.
- Their subordinates know what you don’t. They may choose to tell you a thing or two, or three. Initially, they may not sound believable. Do not ignore or dismiss them.
- Isolation, gaslighting. A toxic leader isn’t interested in resolving conflict (see sign 2). He or she will try talking with just one individual. Unless you’re recording (check your state’s laws), there’s no transparency, and it’s their word against yours.
